Breast elastography is a new and very promising imaging technique that allows the evaluation of the elasticity or stiffness of the tissues examined during ultrasound. Information obtained by elastography helps the physician to further distinguish malignant from benign breast pathology. Cancer generally shows higher hardness/stiffness, therefore elastography can provide the necessary information for the correct diagnosis which can reduce breast biopsies, only to the absolutely necessary ones. Breast elastography is a simple, fast, painless and economical method.
Preparation
No special preparation is required for breast elastography.
Procedure
The test is done during the ultrasound, if further investigation is needed for a finding. It applies little pressure to the skin at the site of the finding, producing color images of the tissues examined, with a view to mapping the elasticity of different colors, allowing for a quantitative estimation of the elasticity of the different tissues.
